The Challenge
The Ice Box Challenge is a public installation and sustainability demonstration taking place from July 2nd to July 29th in Montreal’s historic Old Port, one of the Canada’s most visited summer destinations. The challenge showcases the benefits of high-performance building design, with high-caliber teams constructing their own designed structures. Inside each structure is a large block of ice, and over the course of four weeks, visitors will be invited to come up to the buildings and peer through the windows to see how much ice remains, offering a clear and tangible illustration of the power of energy-efficient design. The teams and public alike will also have the opportunity to compare the performance of each team to the standard Montreal building assembly to provide a control sample for the performance of a typical unconditioned indoor space in Montreal.
Design and build an inclosed structure that will contain 1 ton of ice and prevent it from melting
Tested for 4 weeks in the summer heat
Build with recycled and reusable materials
